Noticing Nature at The Wilson – Winter Sessions

Thu 10 Dec 2026 - Thu 11 Feb 2027 The Wilson Art Gallery & Museum, GL50 3JT

How often do we really stop and look at the natural world around us? A leaf changing colour, the shape of a seed head, birdsong on the way to work, the pattern of bark on a tree. Nature is all around us, but busy lives can make it easy to pass these things by without really noticing them.

This winter we will continue our seasonal journey, the transition from autumn colour to the still and crisp days ahead.. Noticing what nature has to offer and enjoying some activities which bring us closer to the natural world.

Each session will be guided by the seasons and will bring together a mixture of observation, creative activities, discussion and occasional inspiration from The Wilson’s collections and exhibitions. You might sketch, write, make something, explore a natural object, listen, look closely or simply take some time to notice what is around you.

You don’t need to be an artist or a nature expert. There are no right answers and no particular skills required – just curiosity and a willingness to look at the natural world in a slightly different way.

This Winter: Quiet, New Beginnings and Transition

Our next three sessions will explore different aspects of winter.

December – Midwinter & Quiet

Thursday 10th December 2pm - 3.30pm (in the lounge)

We will talk about hibernation, slowing down, what we observe in nature and feel about winter. Look closely at the quiet season. Notice bare trees, winter skies, seed heads, frost, bark and the subtle beauty of the winter landscape.

Our December session will be a period of reflection and conversation. It will then followed by meditation led by Vanessa Angelo - Thompson. An opportunity to really slow and connect. No knowledge required. And we will finish with some time chatting and adding to our nature journal.

January – New Beginnings

Thursday 14th January 2pm - 3.30pm (in Foyle)

Signs of life returning.Look for tiny buds, snowdrops, catkins and the first stage of new growth. Use the opportunity to record what you hear and see.

We will focus on art, music and nature. A chance to hear something uplifting and take to time to listen, and use our senses to draw and sketch what we hear and feel. No experience needed. All materials will be provided.

February – Transition & Spring Flowers

Thursday 11th February 2pm - 3.30pm (in the lounge)

The world beneath our feet – soil and the hidden world. How much life exists beneath our feet that we rarely notice? What happens when we disturb the soil?

Signs of spring – when does spring actually start? Is it a date on the calendar or when nature tells us?

Consider colour and the new life. Notice daffodils, crocuses, primroses and other early flowers beginning to appear.. We will be learning how to weave with Trudi Price and use spring colours. No experience necessary just an opportunity to look towards spring and the end of winter.

Noticing Nature takes place at The Wilson in Cheltenham, on the second Thursday of each month, from 2–3.30pm.
