Every last Wednesday of the month the ECU Education Commission holds a Discussion Group meeting for chess educators to share their experiences and discuss their ideas and knowledge on different topics related to Chess in Education.
Discussion Group Meetings allow participants to learn from each other and gain new insights through different perspectives.
Topic for February 2024: Chess and Community
The connection between Chess in Education and Chess in Communities lies in the game's ability to promote social interaction. By leveraging the educational and community-building potential of chess, communities can create positive environments that support learning, growth, and inclusivity for all. Through chess, communities can empower individuals to develop their skills, talents, and potential by providing access to resources, training, and support. Communities can help individuals thrive both on and off the chessboard, contributing to their personal growth and the overall strength of the community.
Chess can also serve as a bridge across diverse communities, bringing together individuals from different cultural, socioeconomic, and demographic backgrounds. Inclusive chess programs create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate and contribute, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance within the community.
Are there any success stories or notable examples of how chess has made a positive impact in communities, in your area?
Share your story and Let's discuss it!
Devina Rishi set up a chess club in her children's primary school in 1996 and has been teaching chess in Enfield since then. She joined the CSC team shortly afterward and has tutored in many schools in the North London area. At present, in addition to her work with CSC schools, she runs chess classes and club sessions in Enfield for children and adults on a not-for-profit basis. These have been initiated in partnership with Enfield Library as well as Age UK by offering talks & workshops, free of charge, at various community events, followed by a series of subsidised workshops & classes.
Her interests include playing chess for leisure ( not tournaments), lace-making and studying Horticultural studies & Garden Design.
