Every last Wednesday of the month the ECU Education Commission holds a Discussion Group meeting for chess educators to share experiences and discuss their ideas and knowledge on different topics related to Chess in Education.

Discussion Group Meetings allow participants to learn from each other and gain new insights through different perspectives.

This month:
Chess for children with an autism spectrum disorder
FIDE Infinite Chess Project

We are excited to invite you to a discussion on the FIDE Infinite Chess Project,  an initiative designed to explore how chess can be a meaningful educational tool for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This project aims to use the cognitive and social benefits of chess to support the unique learning needs of children on the autism spectrum, providing them with a structured way to develop key skills.

  • Anastasia Sorokina (Leader of the Infinite Chess project, Chair of FIDE Commission for Women's Chess, Chair of ACF Social Commission) Welcome speech 
  • Maria Tamkovich (Coordinator of the Infinite Chess project, International Organizer) - Infinite Chess project roadmap 
  • Ala Mischanka (Co-author of the Infinite Chess Handbook, special needs educational assistant with more than 22 years of experience) - Infinite chess handbook, practical overview.

FIDE Infinite Chess Project aims to increase knowledge and awareness of chess for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), give practical advice to teachers and parents, study the benefits of introducing them to chess and develop various teaching methods. Started in 2019 as a social initiative for 1 group of 4 kids, the project now thrives in 19 countries for more than 150 children with ASD and is coming soon to 6 new more.
Having the support of the International Olympic Committee, the first educational program was written by the project experts: "Handbook" for teachers, tutors and even parents to conduct chess classes for children with autism spectrum disorder. The program is available in English, French, Spanish, Russian, and Arabic for free download at the project's website.
Annual 5 educational seminars organized by the project team have already helped more than 180 participants from 65 countries to explore the ways of teaching chess to kids with ASD, study our unique training program and get practical advice on how ASD kids can benefit from chess.
At the upcoming meeting, the Infinite chess team will share the insights from recent research made for the project, and highlight chess's positive impact on cognitive and behavioral development in children with ASD.
