Chess in Education

Join the Global Conversation!

Every last Wednesday of the month, the ECU Education Commission holds a Discussion Group Meeting for chess educators to share knowledge and discuss ideas on various topics related to Chess in Education.

Discussion Group Meetings allow participants to learn from one another and gain new insights through diverse perspectives.

This month's topic:
Building a Teacher Network for Chess in Education - The Story of Ficheall in Ireland

Ficheall is the Irish word for chess and it is a network of primary school teachers in Ireland who promote chess for its social and cognitive benefits for children. Ficheall is a volunteer-based, not-for-profit organisation founded in 2017 and has grown from a network of 38 schools in year 1 to 800+ schools in 2026.

This presentation will focus on how Ficheall was initially formed and how it has sought to build a sustainable (from a workload perspective) volunteer network as demand from schools has grown in Ireland. It will delve into the successes and challenges Ficheall has encountered.

Speaker
Liam Murray (Ireland)

Liam Murray is co-founder and secretary of the Ficheall organisation in Ireland. Liam worked as a primary school teacher from 2014 to 2022 and has been working full-time in teacher education in Ireland since 2022. In 2020, Liam completed a Master's in Education dissertation titled "Chess for the masses, not for the masters; the effect of chess participation in one primary school in Ireland: an ethnographic study". The research took a broad view of the potential effects of chess participation and built on observed experiences and interviews with children, based on a number of chess activities.
