Bio: Gary Perlman Ph.D was born and raised in Montreal. After high school, he spent 30 years in the United States, mostly doing software development. In 2003, he and his family moved back to Montreal. After his retirement in 2013, he took up genealogy, working closely with JGS-Montreal.org, the Jewish Genealogy Society of Montreal. For about five years, he was a volunteer genealogist at the Donald Berman Maimonides Geriatric Centre, compiling family trees for 20 residents. He has done a lot of work documenting Jewish graves in Montreal, photographing over 50,000 of them, and in 2020, he was the IAJGS volunteer of the year.
Abstract: There are many research resources for Jewish genealogy in Montreal, ranging from international to local. Many are free. In this presentation, Gary Perlman, JGS-Montreal.org webmaster, will discuss what information is needed to start research, and use that to research people in the audience. He will cover the sorts of documents shown in the JGS-Montreal "Getting Started" page. He will make extensive use of the JGS-Montreal Genealogy Dashboard, a resource that allows about 50 databases to be searched, each with a single click.
