"End-of-life boats and potential solutions to protect the coastal environment"

What happens to our fibre glass boats once they reach the end of their life? And what can we do to prevent toxins entering the water stream? An online workshop with Dr Corina Ciocan, Ecotoxicology and Marine Biology lecturer from Brighton University. She, along with Dr Mary Gearey, will present her research on end-of-life boats and their work with communities near Brighton on the issue. Professor Adam Gearey will elaborate on the legal and regulatory aspects. Rob Dunford will represent Langstone Harbour's approach, where many boats are currently being 'dumped'.

In Venice there has been a successful initiative to deal with the issue. Davide Poletto will share his experience working with Venice Lagoon Plastic Free, a bottom-up technology and governance-driven approach that involves the community. The program has successfully managed to recycle boats and other plastics.

Each presentation will take 10 minutes and there is room for questions and discussions afterwards.

The event is part of a local initiative: the Chichester Laboratory that brings together (international) researchers, professionals, local stakeholders and councillors around specific sites and issues that affect Chichester and its surroundings. Chichester Laboratory's aim is to be a catalyst for a better future using  international research and the community to maximise the potential of this amazing area.
