Navigating the political landscape at Stormont can feel daunting, but it remains one of the most effective ways to drive real-world change.

We want you to look at this session through the lens of an issue for your organisation with the idea that this 2.5-hour introductory session will help you cut through the jargon and provide you with a clear, realistic roadmap for engagement on that issue.

We'll focus on the practical mechanics of influence by breaking down:

  • The Landscape: Understanding how the Assembly actually functions and identifying the role and reach of your MLAs.
  • The Approach: How to effectively court and reach representatives, including the often-overlooked strategy of building relationships with MLA staff.
  • The Engine Room: A look at how Committees work and how to make your voice heard during the scrutiny process.
  • The Toolkit: Mastering the use of Assembly Questions (AQs) and other tactical tools to gather information and push for accountability.

This session is about working smarter, not harder. You’ll learn how to time your interventions to match the legislative cycle and how to present your cause in a way that resonates with decision-makers.

The course will be delivered by Fergal McFerran, John O’Doherty, and Emma Murray from the Children’s Law Centre (CLC), who bring years of frontline advocacy experience. We hope they will be joined by a guest speaker (TBC) to provide a well-rounded perspective on making an impact in Parliament Buildings.
