This session examines the intersection of policing and youth rights. Beyond statutory PACE safeguards , children possess fundamental human rights under the UNCRC, including the right to have their views given due weight and protections against arbitrary detention. We will analyse current PACE codes, recent case law, and the Children's Law Centre’s advocacy with the PSNI regarding controversial practices like strip searches and spit guards. Participants will explore strategies to amplify the child’s voice during early criminal proceedings to ensure rights-based outcomes for vulnerable young people.
