Assessment & documentation of learning stories

Thu Nov 5, 2020 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM NZDT

Childspace Institute, 45 Helston Road, Johnsonville, Wellington, 6037

Description

Presented by Ali Porteous.

Learning stories are the bread and butter of an early childhood teacher’s work. It is where we are able to capture the everyday learning of children: their discoveries, their strengths, their interests. We celebrate their development and begin to make meaning of the experiences that we are noticing. But as each child is different, there are also a myriad of different ways in which we can view this learning. This workshop will take you step by step through our new resource ‘Quality Assessment and Documentation’, a copy of which will be yours to keep.

Participants will:

• Have an in-depth look at the four-part Childspace assessment framework “Watch me explore”
• Discuss the features of a robust and relevant learning story
• Unpack and reflect on learning story examples and what a ‘formative assessment sequence’ looks like
• Discover how to meaningfully ensure that we are documenting a child’s continuity of learning
• Learn about different learning frameworks, including theoretical, philosophical and bi-cultural ways of viewing children’s learning
• Discover how we can use different lenses, such as Te Whatu Pōkeka, schemas, learning dispositions and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, amongst others, to enhance our assessment practices

This is an ideal course for kaiako of varied knowledge bases, whether you are just starting out and wanting to learn more about how to write a learning story, or whether you are a more experienced kaiako and just want some fresh inspiration and ideas for your current assessment and documentation practices.

Course runs from 9am-3pm.
