Description
Chillington Hall is an enchanting 18th century house, which is a product of two differing Georgian styles. The south side, built in 1724 by Francis Smith of Warwick, has rooms of an intimate size in contrast to those built on a grander scale by Sir John Soane some sixty years later.
The Saloon, typical of Soane design, features a soaring ceiling topped by a great lantern with beautiful plasterwork.
Grand saloon
The parkland, landscaped by 'Capability' Brown, incorporates the magnificent lake and its architectural follies.
On arrival you will be welcomed and guided around the ground floor of the Hall by Charlie Giffard, who is the 30th member of his family to own the Estate and live at the family home. Charlie will give you a friendly and informative tour around his childhood home and cover subjects such as architecture, art, social and domestic stories and what it's like to live a 21st century way of life in a house that was designed and built for a very different time.
The tour will finish with tea/coffee and scrumptious cakes served in our beautiful gardens on the sun terrace (weather permitting). You are welcome to take a walk in the gardens or to the lake to admire Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown's landscaping at leisure afterwards.
Tickets £20 including tea/coffee and cakes.
