The Folk Orc Folk Day at Coda Music Centre
Sunday 27th April 2025
10.30am - 12pm - Folk Instrument Try-Out and Session Workshop
Borrow an instrument - £20 (limited to 20 tickets)
Bring your own instrument - £15
Have you ever wanted to have a go at playing a banjo? Or the fiddle? Or a mandolin? Or have you had an Irish drum sat in the corner of a room that’s never been played. The Folk Orc Instrument Try-Out and Session Workshop is a chance for you to have that go.
You don’t even need an instrument! We have a collection of twenty traditional folk instruments to be borrowed during the session (no experience or ability necessary, we shall show you everything you need to know). There are mandolins, fiddles, banjos, tenor guitars and bodhran (Irish) drums available to be borrowed. Instruments are handed out on a first come first served basis but if there is a specific instrument that you are interested in then let us know when you purchase your ticket and we shall do our best to reserve one for you. There will be an opportunity to swap instruments around during the session and time at the end of the session to try out instruments you didn’t get a chance to in the session.
Bring your own instrument! Whether it’s an instrument that you are learning to play or one that has been sitting in the corner waiting to be picked up then bring it along and join in. You will get to learn a selection of traditional English folk songs and be guided through the rhythms and chords. This may be your first experience of playing with other people and that is what The Folk Orc is all about. Any age, any ability, acoustic instruments only. Music is provided in chords, treble clef notation and tab.
Under 16s may be accompanied by an adult on the same ticket.
Details of the songs will be released on folkorc.co.uk before the workshop.
2.30pm - 4.30pm - Songbook Session
Songbook Session - £15
The Folk Orc Songbook session is a great chance to experience playing in a large group if you haven’t done so before.
The session will be led by The Folk Orc, playing songs exclusively from the Folk Orc repertoire songbooks (there will be plenty of spare copies on the day).
The Folk Orc Repertoire. Our song books consist of around fifty traditional British and Irish songs that have been specifically arranged for playing in a group. We don’t play pretty folk here, these are upbeat songs about kings, pirates and highwaymen.
This session is open to players of any ability, whether you are a seasoned player or just starting out, then our songbook session is for you. All we ask of you is to bring an acoustic instrument and a have-a-go attitude.
