DECEMBER FILM NETWORKING NIGHT + INDUSTRY TALK
Thu 7 Dec 2023 7:30 PM - 10:30 PM
Traverse Bar & Cafe, EH1 2ED
Description
It’s our last networking night of the year, so be sure to join us for one last get together in 2023 for building connections and community in the local film industry.
But that’s not all!
Short Circuit will be co-hosting this extra special holiday version of our monthly gathering, by bringing with them an inspiring industry panel celebrating and sharing some of this year’s best Scottish success stories from all parts of the sector.
We’ve invited a panel of talented filmmakers and industry professionals who have made incredible achievements in the past couple of years and saw their work recognised both here in Scotland and around the world. From David Macpherson’s first season of The Rig launching on Amazon Prime, to Adura Onashile’s first feature, GIRL, premiering at Sundance and Glasgow Film Festival, to Jen Davies’ success in co-founding CONIC distribution which now represents some of the world’s most critically acclaimed & daring new international films on the festival circuit, our panel will take you through their paths to success in film, what obstacles they have overcome and what inspires them to keep going.
All are welcome. The event is free to attend. PLUS, as added extra holiday bonus, complimentary drinks will be served thanks to Short Circuit during the event!
If you have any access needs, such as a BSL-interpreter, please do get in touch with abbie.clark@glasgowfilm.org to discuss and we will do our very best to accommodate.

Our Panellists:
Adura Onashile is an award-winning Glasgow-based actor, writer and director whose work is known to Scottish audiences, and has toured to India, Brazil, Trinidad, Jamaica, South Africa, Zimbabwe and New Zealand. She has worked with the National Theatre of Scotland, The Lyceum, The National, The Royal Shakespeare Company and The Young Vic. She is a screen star of tomorrow and her debut feature film, Girl – produced by Barry Crerar with support from Screen Scotland, BBC Films and the BFI – had its worldwide premiere this year at Sundance Film Festival and its UK premiere at Glasgow Film Festival 2023.
David Macpherson is a writer from the Highlands, now living in Edinburgh. His debut show THE RIG premiered on Amazon Prime in January 2023. Filmed exclusively in Leith's First Stage Studios, the sci-fi infused eco-thriller was broadcast in over 200 territories around the world and topped the Amazon UK listings for 4 consecutive weeks. David has a number of other TV projects in development and a second series of THE RIG is currently in post-production. Before making his breakthrough in TV, David self-published a novel, 'Here Be Dragons', and took his solo spoken word show 'Odes to Joy' to the Edinburgh Festival in 2018.
Jen Davies is the co-founder of Conic – a UK/Ireland film distributor which launched in October 2022. Prior to this, Jen spent a decade as Creative Director at classic film company Park Circus with various side hustles in design, book scouting for film and movie marketing. Before that she worked for Glasgow Film as Head of Communications and Marketing and was also part of the team that set up SQIFF, the Scottish Queer International Film Festival. Jen loves films, stories, pictures, interesting ideas and making things happen.
*If you've not been to a Cinetopia Networking Night before, this is one of our regular nights for the general film industry to get together for a casual drink and/or chat. Started in 2018, we felt there would be a great need and opportunity to meet others across the city in the industry on a regular basis. Whether you are looking for your next gig or your next collaborator, we hope that these events will either help a bit in making those connections or merely just offer the chance to catch up with colleagues and crew members.
Please RSVP so we can let our hosts know how many to expect. If you have to cancel, please let us know so we can offer the space to someone else!
Cinetopia is a organisation that seeks to facilitate the opportunities for the Edinburgh-based film community to work, create, and connect. More info about of our film event offerings, go to www.cinetopia.co.uk
Short Circuit is a film talent initiative for Scotland. We offer funding to support short films into production, and the development of first feature films. Additionally, we facilitate a variety of training schemes for new and emerging filmmakers, allowing upcoming screenwriters and producers to take the next step in their career. Short Circuit is delivered by Film City Futures in partnership with Glasgow Film, and supported by Screen Scotland and BFI NETWORK (using funds from the National Lottery).
