Circle & Star Presents: McAlmont & Bowie
Not a tribute. A personal map of discovery — how one artist comes to another’s work late, slowly, and then all at once.
Growing up in the UK, David McAlmont’s earliest exposure to David Bowie was oddly narrow and slightly absurd — The Laughing Gnome lodged in childhood memory. After moving to Guyana, Bowie remained a distant figure, represented almost exclusively by the global sheen of Let’s Dance. It wasn’t until McAlmont’s return to the UK that everything shifted.
Hearing Diamond Dogs for the first time proved revelatory — not just musically, but existentially. Bowie emerged not as a pop phenomenon, but as a vocalist of fierce conviction and a sage of alienation, fear, hunger, possibility and sexuality.
Through song and spoken reflection, McAlmont traces Bowie’s work as a living, evolving conversation — from dystopian narratives and fractured identities to moments of tenderness, defiance and grace. Each song marks a stage in McAlmont’s growing investment as a listener and fellow artist navigating voice, reinvention and survival.
Foregrounding interpretation over impersonation, this is about what happens when great songs meet lived experience — a story of delayed recognition, deep listening, and how Bowie’s music continues to reveal itself.
