Jermay — The Magician, In Search of Magic

Our first conjuror. Three nights only.

This room has held singers, writers and actors. In November, for the first time, it holds a magician — and the room turns out to be the whole point.

Luke Jermay brings In Search of Magic to Circle & Star — classical sleight of hand, staged as a private soirée in Victorian London, and performed at the top of a Victorian staircase in a late-19th-century building on Heath Street.

The Evening

Across oceans, over mountains, around a frozen lake beneath a lighthouse at the end of the world. Our Magician has come back with stories, and with impossibilities from the golden age of conjuring — the hidden work of underground card cheats, the swordsmanship of the flamboyant L'Homme Masqué — revived by a contemporary master.

No trapdoors. No smoke or mirrors. No camera trickery, no mechanical deception. Two hands, a few simple objects, and the living fictions they can make between them.

Why it has to happen here

Sleight of hand is the one art a screen destroys. Cut the shot and he has cheated; widen it and you have lost the hands. It needs a person close enough to watch breathing, and a room small enough to watch them in.

Fifty-five seats up an old staircase — a theatre in its own right, with its own front door and West End sound and lighting. The nearest seat is close enough to see his fingers work, and still not close enough to catch them.

Proximity. Presence. And then the thing that could not have happened, happening a yard away. This is the real magic.

Who is the Magician?

Luke Jermay is acknowledged by his peers as a master of sleight of hand. He has presented his own creations in more than thirty countries — London's West End, the Edinburgh Festival, the Hollywood Magic Castle — and he is the magician other magicians call, having built illusions performed by Derren Brown, Dynamo, Lu Chen and Keith Barry.
