WITS END — A Comedy About Death

Circle & Star is honoured to welcome Estée Stimler’s first play to Hampstead this November.

Marvin Becker has died, and his three children have one afternoon to bury him.

Yitzy gave up fourteen years of his life — a scholarship, a career, a future — to care for their father. Cooper paid for every penny of that care from three thousand miles away, and never once visited. Denise, in the middle, has opinions about both of them and no intention of keeping them to herself.

Around them: an aunt who has not stopped talking since 1961, a rabbi hired off the internet who turns out to be a working comedian, a eulogy with the wrong names in it, and a grave that has been dug to the wrong size.

By the end of the afternoon the Beckers will have learned something about their father that none of them suspected — and will have to decide whether they can stand to sit in the same room for a week.

Wits End is a comedy about who did the caring, who paid for it, and what we owe someone we never really knew. The audience is the congregation, and in a room of fifty-five there is nowhere to look away.
