David Bowie — Hunky Dory

28 January 2027 · Doors 7:00pm · Sleeve Notes — The Listening Salon · Nº.006
Wonder Room presents · hosted at the Circle & Star, Hampstead
Hosted by Jonathan Wingate

A view from inside Bowie's world. Jonathan Wingate was David Bowie's spokesman. No other Sleevenotes night has had this. Every salon so far has had Jonathan telling the story of a record. This one has him telling his own.

The story first. Then the record, in full. One album an evening — opened up, talked through, then played end to end. Lights low. Phones away. Fifty-five seats, listening together. This is not a gig. It's a salon, where the album is the star of the evening.

Side A · Discussion — a guided deep dive into Hunky Dory: the man who spoke for him, the piano at Haddon Hall, Rick Wakeman and the Bechstein.
Interval — a short break, a light refreshment.
Side B · Listen — David Bowie's Hunky Dory, in full, in the dark, in company.

1971. Written at the piano in Haddon Hall, in the spring his son was born — the record where David Bowie stopped trying on other people's voices and found his own. Changes, Life on Mars?, Kooks, Quicksand. Fifty-five years old in December; fifty-five seats in January, three weeks after what would have been his eightieth birthday.
