A festive evening with the City of Chester Bluecoat Band

Events list

Steeped in over 170 years of history, the City of Chester Bluecoat Band is one of the city’s most enduring cultural treasures. Founded in the mid-19th century with links to Chester’s Bluecoat School, the band has proudly represented the city in its distinctive blue uniform ever since. From walking the famous city walls on Palm Sunday to performing on international stages, the band continues to carry forward a rich tradition that is both uniquely local and widely celebrated.

Throughout its long history, the Bluecoat Band has been an integral part of Chester’s story, surviving wars, cultural changes, and even a pandemic—always finding its way back to the music that unites community and audience alike. With memorable tours across Europe, appearances at major contests, and a proud heritage rooted in the city itself, the band embodies both continuity and a spirit of celebration.

Today, under the musical direction of Ewan Easton MBE, Principal Tuba with the Hallé Orchestra, the City of Chester Bluecoat Band brings world-class music-making to audiences across the region. Every performance is a showcase of brass band tradition at its finest—rich in history, energy, and emotion—making each concert an experience not to be missed.
