York rivers trail: Stories, nature and resilience along the river

Join us for a guided exploration of the newly launched York rivers trail, a place-based route that helps people understand how York's rivers support nature, shape communities and play a vital role in creating a more climate-resilient city.

Beginning on the trail itself, participants will walk a selected section while discovering how the route has been designed to reveal the connections between water, people and place. Along the way, York Hidden History will uncover stories that have shaped life along the rivers for centuries, while trail features prompt conversations about nature, wellbeing, heritage, environmental change and climate resilience. Participants will also explore how York's waterways support biodiversity, connect people with nature and contribute to a healthier, more resilient future for the city.

Following the trail's first summer season, this event provides an opportunity to reflect on the experience and contribute ideas that will help shape the trail for future generations. Participants will be invited to share stories, memories, observations and aspirations for York's rivers through a range of creative engagement activities delivered along the route.

Part guided walk or wheel, part creative conversation, this event invites residents and visitors to explore what the York rivers trail means to them, how rivers continue to shape life in York today, and how we can build a more resilient future for communities, nature and the city itself.

Taking place during the overlap of the York Walking Festival, York 50+ Festival and York Environment Festival, this event brings together themes of walking, nature, heritage and community resilience.
