York rivers trail: the rivers and us - following the Foss

Join us for a guided exploration of the River Foss and its role in shaping York's past, present and future. Part of York Environment Festival 2026, this event invites participants to explore connections between rivers, nature, communities and future generations.

Beginning at Tower Gardens on the York rivers trail, participants will follow a section of the route before travelling towards the River Foss and the Foss Barrier, discovering how York's waterways support wildlife, connect communities and help the city respond to climate and environmental challenges.

Along the way, participants will be invited to explore stories of the river, reflect on the relationship between people and place, and learn more about the role of rivers in York's heritage, biodiversity and resilience. The walk will encourage participants to consider the role that healthy waterways can play in supporting nature recovery, improving climate resilience and creating benefits for future generations. Through guided conversation and creative engagement activities, the walk will encourage participants to share their own observations, experiences and aspirations for York's waterways.

Part guided walk, part creative conversation, this event offers an opportunity to see the city from a different perspective and consider how we can build a positive future for communities, nature and our rivers.
