York rivers trail: The rivers and us

York rivers trail: The rivers and us is an exhibition exploring the relationship between people, rivers, nature and place in York.  Taking place across the city over the summer, including installations at Homestead Park, Rowntree Park and NHS sites such as York Hospital and Foss Park Hospital from mid‑July, we are delighted to bring the exhibition to City Screen Playhouse.

Through photography, stories and creative responses inspired by York's rivers, visitors will discover different perspectives on nature, heritage, wellbeing, climate resilience and the future of York's rivers. Part of the wider York rivers trail programme, the exhibition invites reflection on the role rivers play in shaping communities, supporting nature and creating a resilient future for York.

Developed with communities across York, the exhibitions reflect a wide range of voices and experiences. For some, the work is rooted in local landscapes and everyday encounters with the river. For others, it explores memory, emotion, imagination and environmental change.

At their heart, the exhibitions are about shared experience - bringing together different people, places and perspectives through creativity. They invite visitors to pause, reflect and see the river, and their relationship to it, in new ways.

This is part of York Environment Festival 2026, inviting participants to explore connections between rivers, nature, communities and future generations.
