Description
The Trafford Design Code, officially adopted on 16th September 2024, sets a clear standard for the quality expected in new developments across the borough. Written as a Supplementary Planning Document, it serves as a key material consideration in planning decisions, complementing the National Design Guide and National Model Design Code. By outlining specific requirements, the Trafford Design Code ensures that the expectations of the community, developers, and landowners are clearly defined, promoting consistency and high standards in all future developments. Consultation on the code, which was supported with funding from the government’s Design Code Pathfinder Programme, began in 2022. Altrincham and Bowden Civic Society contributed to the consultation and engagement process.
Civic Voice has championed such initiatives, recognising that effective design codes are essential in delivering developments that reflect local character and community priorities. This pathfinder project is a critical step in demonstrating how design codes can enhance both the built environment and community engagement in planning.
Join Ian Harvey and Elisabeth Lewis for a discussion on the impact of the Trafford Design Code, its role as a national model for best practice, and the opportunities and challenges it presents for place-making in Trafford and beyond.
