The Argentine Golpe - 50 Years Later
The Argentine Golpe - 50 Years Later
Overview: On 24 March 1976, a military coup against Argentine president Isabel Perón initiated a dictatorship (1976-1983) that disappeared or killed over 30,000 people while violating the human rights of many more. Fifty years on, social, academic, and state responses to this period remain deeply contested. After an uneven history of juridically innovative criminal trials against military generals, “Impunity Laws” seeking to bury the past, and the construction of internationally influential human rights organisations and forensic research, the current far-right government of Javier Milei has reinforced negationist attitudes towards the genocidal violence of the so-called “National Reorganization Process”. This interdisciplinary event brings scholars from different fields together to reconsider the still weighty impact of dictatorship as well as the different ways this impact has been approached (and continues to be approached) academically.
