CREATING AN INCLUSIVE SPACE:
Cloud 9 recognizes that music festivals can create environments where discrimination and oppression can go easily unnoticed. Our team is actively working to make sure our infrastructures, our processes, our volunteers, and our security staff are prepared to prevent discrimination of all type as well as support patrons subject to any oppressive behaviour.
It is important to acknowledge that racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and many other types of discrimination can be hurtful without needing violence or outrage. Subtle actions can lead to a very hostile space and need to be recognized as unacceptable. We are ensuring that all individuals among the Cloud 9 team are equipped to prevent, identify, and react to such actions. To learn more about the concrete actions that Cloud 9 is taking to ensure that our festival is a place for all, or to support us in making it so, please contact our festival manager at hdavies@no9.ca.
CONFLICT DE-ESCALATION AND EMERGENCY PLANNING:
While working to ensure that Cloud 9 is a respectful and safe event, we are also developing plans for our volunteers and security staff to follow if certain situations arise. It is important for us to be transparent about how conflict and emergency will be handled on the day of the festival.
For many reasons linked to power dynamics and prioritizing the comfort and safety of all patrons, we aim to minimize police involvement with our event. Due to the permits we acquired and the rurality of the location of Cloud 9, a police car is required to be near our site. The main reasons for their presence is to discourage drunk driving and to deal with any illegal drug possession, usage, or sale.
With this in mind, Cloud 9 is not counting on the police to help de-escalate conflicts or emergencies. For all minimal instances, we encourage you to reach out to the volunteers on site. If the situation is out of the scope of our volunteers, they will seek out support from our security staff. Police will only be involved if individuals are behaving extremely violently or putting other patrons in extreme danger.
