Roman micro mosaics, or 'Filato', are a rare and highly intricate technique developed in Rome in the 18th century. Filato blends historical tradition with innovation, creating fine designs within just a few centimetres of space.

In this demonstration, mosaic artist Eniko Leanyvari will provide an introduction to Roman Filato mosaic, exploring the characteristics of the craft, its origins, the materials and tools used and the traditional techniques involved. Attendees will also be introduced to Roman stucco, the binding agent for these micro mosaics, and have the opportunity to interact with various hand-pulled glass threads before observing a mosaic artist at work.

About the Maker

Enikő Leányvári trained in both classical and contemporary mosaic techniques in Ravenna, Rome, and London and is committed to preserving and developing the art of traditional mosaic making. She established Tiger’s Eye Mosaic Studio at Cockpit Deptford, where she also set up her glass-pulling workshop.
