Attention all weirdos, punks, artists, Southern queers, service industry baddies, tarot card readers, mutual aid organizers, animal rights activists, drag royalty, and anyone who has ever taken an SSRI – COMMITTED: The Musical is coming for you.
COMMITTED: The Musical tells the story of a young woman jostled between the worlds inside her head, psychiatric institutions, and her queer Southern community. The show explores grief, spirituality, and mental health, asking the questions: Where is the line between a mental breakdown and a spiritual breakthrough? How do we support others through mental health crises while maintaining care for ourselves? Is it possible to reclaim our personhood after being discarded?
The subject matter is dark, but there’s a twist; COMMITTED is bursting at the seams with comedy, joy, and community. Characters include a talking one-eyed cat with a punk-rock haircut, a seductive singing bed, and drag king pill bottles performing as a boy band. And that’s not all – watch out for a visionary medieval nun, a frisky Scottish witch, a gender-defying Haitian Revolutionary, and a long-overlooked Beat Poet from the Bronx.
Performances take place August 13-30 at the Fruit (305 S Dillard Street, Durham, 27701). More details about parking and accessibility will be provided closer to the event.
All seating is general admission. Tickets are $30 plus fees.
