Values in the Media: working with values in practice
Thu 23 Jan 2025 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM GMT
Online, Zoom
Description
Common Cause Foundation invites you to join a workshop developed specifically for those working in the UK media.
Values in the media are inevitable, so how do we practice being transparent about these values? What does it look like for journalists, editors and others working in the media to be more responsible and accountable for these values? Which values might we choose to transparently and intentionally foreground in a media landscape that is fit for these times and the many social, political, economic and environmental challenges we find ourselves navigating?
During this workshop, we will draw on insights from the field of social psychology and explore how the media can work to become more responsible about the values it elevates in its working practices and in the content it creates; being more conscious of the subsequent impact on our cultural values. In doing so, we can feel more confident that our work is responsive to the large-scale social and environmental crises we face.
Is this workshop for me?
If you attended our Values in the Media half day conference in November 2024 and found it interesting, this next step will deepen your understanding of values and start to introduce practical ways to embed this in your work.
Whether or not you attended the conference, if you work in the media industry, care about social and environmental issues, and you are frustrated that most responses to local, national and global problems seem woefully inadequate by comparison to the scale of the challenges, then this workshop is for you.
This session is online and you will need a stable internet connection.
What is my commitment?
The session is two hours long. If you weren't able to join us for the conference in November, we really encourage you to watch the event recording in advance, so as to get the most out of the workshop (which will be available online shortly).
The session will take place on 23rd January 2025 at 3.00pm GMT.
We realise that this time won’t work for everyone. If you are keen to join, but unable to at this time, please let us know. One alternative is for you to join one of Common Cause’s upcoming Values 101 workshop series, though these are open to anyone and so aren’t specifically tailored for people working in the media. It is likely that we will be running other Values in the Media events and workshops through 2025. You can sign up to our newsletter here to stay in the loop.
What to expect?
Common Cause workshops combine lecture-style teaching, group exploration and discussion, as well as personal reflection and group activities. Your workshop facilitators will be members of the Common Cause team (more information below) and you’ll also have the chance to learn from your fellow participants.
Cost
This event is free to attend.
A bit about Common Cause Foundation
Common Cause is a non-profit that works to champion and reflect the human values that underpin our care for one another and our living planet in mainstream culture. We work with a broad range of cultural influencers to rebalance the values that we find reinforced in our day-to-day lives, opening up greater possibilities for imagining and nurturing new alternatives to living together on our one shared planet.
Who will be leading the workshop?
The workshop will be facilitated by Elsie Roderiques and Ruth Taylor.
Elsie worked in leadership and supporting roles to challenge dominant narratives in pursuit of more just economic and political systems with interconnectedness at their heart. Her experience of the full spectrum of the ‘incredible’ to the ‘incredibly problematic’ within the public relations and social change sectors motivates her to seek new ways of achieving social justice that breaks the chains of perpetuating systemic problems and pushes the global narrative in a new direction, working in solidarity with those on the frontline of oppression and injustice.
Ruth has worked in the field of social and environmental change for close to 15 years. She is driven by the question of how more people can be encouraged to think, feel and act differently when it comes to the multiple and interconnected challenges we are experiencing globally. Currently, Ruth splits her time between working for the Common Cause Foundation, and as a freelance narrative strategist, supporting a range of different organisations from NGOs to cultural institutions to consider how their work could help shift harmful narratives towards more regenerative and just alternatives.
I have questions!
If you think you might be interested in attending but want to find out a little more before you sign up, we’d be really happy to have a chat. Please feel free to email Elsie on eroderiques@commoncausefoundation.org.
