Butterflies, Moths and Growing for the Whole Insect Lifecycle - The Garden Web of Life Workshop Series

Sun 19 Jul 2026 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM Alice Park Community Garden, BA17BL

Join us for the seventh of our Garden Web of Life workshop series focusing on Butterflies, Moths and Growing for the Whole Insect Lifecycle.  So often pollinators get the spotlight when thinking about garden planting, so this month we want to shine the spotlight on other creatures who need more than pollen and nectar to complete their lifecycles!

NB. We're also running a Community Moth Morning at 7am, where you can come and meet some of the Moths sharing the Community Garden with us. See main events page for details.

Learn: About the amazing world of Butterflies and Moths, the huge diversity within this family, their worrying decline and how we can ensure they're supported in our green spaces.  We'll look at some of the species we might find in our gardens, and the food plants they need as both adults and importantly as caterpillars - often native wildflower species lacking in our green spaces.  We'll also think beyond food plants, to habitats and garden management to help them thrive.

We'll be joined by Nick Patel, Naturalist and Wildlife guide, who shares his wealth of knowledge so passionately, and has a particular soft spot for butterflies.

Do: We'll do a bit of citizen science - taking part together in the Big Butterfly Count for Butterfly Conservation in the Community Garden. Then we'll head out for a butterfly spotting walk with Nick.

Plan: How to bring more butterfly and Moth habitat into your garden.  Bring a plan or aerial image of your garden if you'd like to think about your own space.

Share: Tea and cake, plus wildlife sightings, gardening for wildlife tips/wins, and ways to advocate for wildlife beyond your patch.

We are asking for a donation to cover the costs of running this workshop, and have set a suggested amount which covers tutor fees, insurance, tea/coffee/cake and materials. We would however like our workshops to be accessible to all, so genuinely feel welcome to adjust this to what you can afford. Children do not need a ticket.
All welcome, children should be accompanies by an adult.
We will be working outdoors, so dress for the weather.
The space is accessible for wheelchairs. Please let us know if you have any accessibity requirements

Each month we will be looking at part of the web of life that calls our gardens home and how we can support this vital web by creating a haven for wildlife in our green spaces. Future workshops include bats, hedgehogs, worms, winter migrants and foxes.
