Hedgehogs, Houses and Highways - The Garden Web of Life Workshop Series

Join us for the ninth of our Garden Web of Life workshop series focusing on Hedgehogs, Houses and Highways.  Continuing our nocturnal journey from last moth, we'll be learning more about one of the cutest garden visitors - Hedgehogs!  Once a regular sighting in our urban green spaces, their numbers have declined drastically (by 97% since the 50's!) and are now rarely seen. We need to do all we can to ensure their survival.

Learn: All about Hedgehogs! What they eat, their lifecycle, why we are loosing them and most importantly how we can make this area a haven for Hedgehogs. We'll look at how to provide natural food for them by supporting beetles and other insects in your garden, how to provide secure shelter for them, and about connectivity between gardens and green spaces. We'll also look at other hazards to Hedgehogs plus how to help if you find a sick or injured Hog.

We're excited to be joined by Yvonne Cox, who runs Hedgehog Rescue - a volunteer run hedgehog hospital, based in Yate, which cares for, treats and rehabilitates more than 300 hedgehogs every year. Yvonne will be sharing her expertise on Hedgehogs and how we can support them.

Do: We'll be making a Hedgehog home for the Community Garden, so that you can see how it's done.

Plan: How to bring more Hedgehog habitat into your garden.  Bring a plan or aerial image of your garden if you'd like to think about your own space.

Share: Tea and cake, plus wildlife sightings, gardening for wildlife tips/wins, and ways to advocate for wildlife beyond your patch.

We are asking for a donation to cover the costs of running this workshop, and have set a suggested amount which covers tutor fees, insurance, tea/coffee/cake and materials. We would however like our workshops to be accessible to all, so genuinely feel welcome to adjust this to what you can afford. Children do not need a ticket.
All welcome, children should be accompanies by an adult.
We will be working outdoors, so dress for the weather.
The space is accessible for wheelchairs. Please let us know if you have any accessibity requirements

Each month we will be looking at part of the web of life that calls our gardens home and how we can support this vital web by creating a haven for wildlife in our green spaces. Future workshops include Hedgehogs, Worms, winter migrants and Foxes.
