Join us for the next in our Garden Web of Life workshop series focusing on Winter Migrants, Berries and Hedges. Now is the time of winter Bird migrations, as summer residents have left for warmer winter territory, new arrivals take their place, seeking out our relatively mild winters compared to those further North. How can we ensure our urban green spaces are supporting these visitors when times are tough over winter.
Learn: All about the Bird species who spend the winter months in our urban gardens and green spaces, who to look out for, the journeys they make and what they need in order to thrive. Many feed on winter berries, historically provided by billowing hedgerows - which are disappearing from our landscapes. And Hedges are beneficial to so much more than the birds who visit, creating porosity and corridors between spaces.
We're delighted that Nick Patel (wilderskies.co.uk/) will be joining us again to lead this workshop, sharing his passion and knowledge for urban wildlife - his workshops are always very popular!
Walk: We'll head out on a walk around Alice Park, on the look out for some of the migrant species we've discussed and for some of the hedgerow species/habitats they need. Nick has unbelievable eyes/ears when it comes to Birds!
Plan: How to bring trees, berries and hedges into your garden. Bring a plan or aerial image of your garden if you'd like to think about your own space.
Share: Tea and cake, plus wildlife sightings, gardening for wildlife tips/wins, and ways to advocate for wildlife beyond your patch.
We are asking for a donation to cover the costs of running this workshop, and have set a suggested amount which covers tutor fees, insurance, tea/coffee/cake and materials. We would however like our workshops to be accessible to all, so genuinely feel welcome to adjust this to what you can afford. Children do not need a ticket.
All welcome, children should be accompanies by an adult.
We will be working outdoors, so dress for the weather.
The space is accessible for wheelchairs. Please let us know if you have any accessibity requirements
Each month we will be looking at part of the web of life that calls our gardens home and how we can support this vital web by creating a haven for wildlife in our green spaces. Future workshops include Hedgehogs, Worms, winter migrants and Foxes.
