Dear CSSSA community,

Join us for our webinar with Leigh Tesfatsion (Iowa State University) for Completely Agent-Based Modeling (c-ABM): A Right Mathematics for an Increasingly Agentic World?

🗓️ Date: Tuesday, September 22, 2026
🕚 Time: 11:00 AM Eastern Time
💻 Location: Zoom (link provided upon registration)

Abstract: Physicists pursuing cosmological topics sometimes refer to their work as a search for a Theory of Everything (ToE), and they rely heavily on classical mathematics in this pursuit. Some of these physicists appear to believe social science is a “lessor” science due to its necessary reliance on “less precise” forms of theorizing, such as inferences drawn from computer-assisted computational experiments. In this presentation, I stress, to the contrary, that theorizing based entirely on classical mathematics is not well suited for the study of our increasingly agentic real world. Real-world participants include decision-making agents (AI-enhanced constructions as well as living entities) capable of prevision, learning, deliberately hidden intentionality, cognitive dissonance (beliefs in false propositions), and leaps of faith (beliefs in undecidable propositions). This presentation explains and illustrates how Completely Agent-Based Modeling (c-ABM) enables the direct modeling and study of open-ended dynamic worlds exhibiting these complex agentic real-world facets.

Bios: Leigh Tesfatsion received the Ph.D. degree in economics from the University of Minnesota, Mpls., in 1975, with a minor in mathematics. She is Professor Emerita of Economics at Iowa State University, and an IEEE Life Senior Member. Her principal current research areas are electric power market design and the development of Agent-based Computational Economics (ACE) platforms for the performance testing of these designs.

We look forward to seeing you there,
