Wed Feb 28, 2024 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM EST
Metropolitan Transportation Authority, 2 Broadway, 20th Fl Board Room, New York, NY, 10004
Description
Join us in celebrating Black History Month with renowned artist Xenobia Bailey. The artist has delivered major public commissions, including “Funktional Vibrations” (2015) at the NYC Transit 34 St-Hudson Yards station and “Funktional Frequency, Liberation Station” (2020) at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington DC. Known for her vibrant crocheted works that reference funk music and African American culture, Bailey's art can also be found in the permanent collections at Harlem’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Museum of Contemporary Arts, and the Museum of Arts and Design. Bailey will share her perspective on African American craft and music traditions and the importance of celebrating the contributions of African American artists to American culture. Sandra Bloodworth, Director, MTA Arts & Design, will open the program with a virtual tour highlighting the many artworks in the MTA system created by African American artists as COMTO-New York celebrates the 2024 Black History Theme, “African Americans and the Arts.”
