Conestee Cleanups! - Volunteer Litter Sweeps in the Preserve
Multiple dates and times
Conestee Nature Preserve, 29607
Description
We're so fortunate to have miles of the picturesque Reedy River flowing through the center of the Preserve. Unfortunately, the river just so happens to a be a super highway for litter to make it's way on to our banks. Together, though, we can work to clean-up that litter and keep Conestee clean! We're excited to invite dozens of volunteers out this winter for a series of litter sweeps. Winter is the best time to do litter sweeps at the Preserve for a couple key reasons...
- There is less vegetation which makes it easier to find the trash and easier to navigate off trail.
- No snakes to worry about!
During this volunteer event you will be assigned a section of the Preserve to pick up trash. We will provide trash bags, trash grabbers, and gloves. If you have your own work gloves and or grabbers, please bring them! Please wear shoes that can get muddy and wet and be prepared for walking off trail. We encourage you to bring your own water and snacks, but we will have a water cooler for you to refill your bottle if necessary.
This year, we're thrilled to be partnering with 3 great organizations - Greenville County's Litter Prevention, the South Carolina Aquarium (all the way from Charleston!), and Friends of the Reedy River!
*NEW* this year!
The Aquarium will be joining us for our first two sweeps, in December and January, and for these we will be doing something new for Conestee! The South Carolina Aquarium is steadfast in not only the collection of litter, but also in tracking the contents of that litter. This data is critical in identifying the most problematic debris and can be a powerful tool in helping to develop solutions for reducing trash. We hope you'll all find more fulfillment and joy during the litter sweeps as we make an effort to provide as much data as possible while we collect! If you're interested in learning more, check out their app --> the Litter Free Digital Journal.
WHO
Everyone is welcome, but make sure your little one is old enough and capable of walking a lot and trudging off trail to collect trash! Please RSVP so we know how many people to expect!
Prior to volunteering at Conestee Nature Preserve, we ask that you please fill out our Volunteer Waiver Form. If you have previously filled out this form, then you do not need to do so again.
