Religious trauma and ambivalent faith: working with those who have had difficult experiences of religion

Wed 10 Sep 2025 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM BST Online, Zoom

This live online training session for psychologists, therapists and counsellors will help you feel more confident in working with individuals who have had difficult experiences of religion, whether or not they currently have a faith

The session is a workshop style - interactive (to the extent you feel comfortable) and reflective, with no more than 15 participants. It will incorporate didactic teaching, reflective exercises, and group discussions.

Content

  • Why faith and religion are topics we cannot ignore in therapy, even with clients who do not call themselves religious.
  • The positive and negative outcomes associated with faith and spiritual practices, as well as with leaving organised religion.
  • The added complexity of trauma that occurs in religious settings, and what to be aware of when working with religious trauma.
  • The impact religious trauma or leaving formal religion can have, even decades later.
  • Ways to feel more comfortable talking about topics related to faith, religion and spirituality with clients.
  • Further increasing our awareness of own own attitudes (both positive and negative) towards faith, religion and spirituality, and how these attitudes may unconsciously influence our clinical practice.

Pricing
Tickets are offered on a sliding scale to make the training as accessible as possible whilst reflecting the time, labour and expertise involved. Three options are offered:
