Connections and Frame Drums UK present: Middle Eastern Percussion Weekend- London
This is a great opportunity for those who have not tried this instrument tradition yet and want to give it a try and see how they feel about it, and for those who want to keep on developing their skills!
Elizabeth Nott will be starting the weekend with beginners and intermediate frame drum and darbuka workshops on the 1st June.
She has been organising and facilitating Middle Eastern Percussion workshops for over 12 years now in London at various venues, and at Music Tree for 2 years. More recently, she as been teaching workshops and courses in Cambridge in person and continues to also teach online to people from abroad or far from London.
She has been performing Middle Eastern, North African and Balkan music for over 14 years as well with various artists including: Maya Youssef, Ahmed Mukhtar, Karma, Amira Their, Tatcho Drom, and many more. Elizabeth has also played for theatre and storytelling including
" The Light in the Stone, a tale of ancient light and sacred secrets" by Sarah Deco and most recently "Dancing Queer" a play being developed in Bristol and showcasing on the 12th April. You can check more on Elizabeth's works here: www.elizabethnott.co.uk
Elizabeth is very excited to have two amazing guest artists on Sunday 2nd June for this season's workshops:
Antonio Romero (leading the "Improvisation" workshop for intermediate and advance students), its an amazing improviser and performer of many traditions. He is a drummer and percussionist specialising in Middle Eastern, Indian, Flamenco and traditional Arabic music, highly sought after in the world music circuit.
Antonio will be teaching some rudiments for Darbuka, Frame Drum and Cajon and will discuss in detail and give some answers to some of the questions and dilemmas around the art of improvisation (and practising). Although aimed at intermediate to advanced musicians, there will be some answers and ideas for musicians of all levels.
With a career spanning over 30 years, he has collaborated with many leading world class artists live on stage and in recordings for albums and films.
TRAINING: Royal Music Conservatory Manuel de Falla (Spain)
THEATRE: On-stage percussionist for the highly successful UK premiere musical ‘The Band’s Visit’ (Donmar Warehouse). On-stage percussionist for the European premiere musical ‘A Song of Songs‘ (Park Theatre).
STAGE: BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Laura Marling, Brian Finnegan, Boris Grebenshchikov, El Barrio, Hamza Namira, Matoula Zamani, Sarah Jane Morris, Antonio Forcione, Benjamin Escoriza (Radio Tarifa), India Martinez, Hakim, Faia Younan, Lanja Ali, Cigdem Aslan, London Bulgarian Choir, Los Delinquentes and Agustín Carbonell among many others.
He has given seminars and run workshops at Dartington International Festival, Royal Northern College of Music, St. John University, Southbank Centre, School of Oriental and African Studies, King Abdullah University (Saudi Arabia), Morocco and Spain
Kalia Lyraki (leading the "repertoire" workshop for all levels) is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist specialising in the music of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. She will perform for us traditional music from the Middle East on Nay and sing songs from her native Greece. This way, percussion students will be able to put into context what they have learnt so far and develop more their musicality by playing along with live music.
She studied Ethnomusicology BA at SOAS and Ethnochoreology MA at Roehampton University.
Career highlights include performing at WOMAD, BBC Proms and for HRH the Prince of Wales. Her music can be heard in films (Never Let Go), documentaries (Sappho: Love and Life in Lesvos), and video-games (Assassin’s Creed, Total War, Runescape).
