Art In The Sun

Join us in the wonderful surroundings of The Sun Pub on North Street, for an evening of art, conversation, and creativity.

Each month we meet and experiment with different themes and techniques. Recent sessions have featured watercolour and drawing pens, sculpting with air dry clay, a variety of printmaking techniques, and collage. Doug Shaw is your artist in residence and will be on hand to provide any assistance you might need. We usually work with a range of materials including ink, paint, drawing pens and more, and you will see how simple techniques can create dramatic effects. This session will start at 7.45pm and run through to around 9.30pm - with a bit of flex if you need some more time.

'I'm Ready For My Close Up'

For our April session we'll be working on 30cm x 40cm canvas boards (included in the ticket price along with all materials). Often we work on paper and card but this session is all about the brushes and the paint on a canvas surface. You can choose your own subject for this session but with spring flowers starting to burst forth, I'm reminded of the big bold 'close up' floral work by Georgia O'Keeffe. O'Keeffe worked representationally and in abstract - sometimes filling the canvas with a single flower. O'Keeffe said "I had to create an equivalent for what I felt about what I was looking at – not copy it." I really like this notion - it frees us from the need to replicate - inviting us to put our own stamp on what we're seeing.

No experience is necessary, we welcome people of all abilities. The most important things to bring with you are your enthusiasm, and a willingness to try something new. We'll explore some simple tips to help you work at a larger scale.

Remember - the choice of subject is down to you. Pick whatever you want, but get up close.
