Opening night of the WxNW New England Festival is Friday June 9th at 7 p.m. at the Ashfield Congregational Church. We will hear Amy Beach’s late, brilliant ‘String quartet in one movement,’ featuring Inuit folk melodies, alongside part of Tomlinson Griffes’ ‘Two sketches based on Indian themes,’ based on Chippewa folk songs. Music of the Roma people, interpreted by Béla Bártok and Franz Joseph Haydn, will accompany a section from Gerald Vizenor's Satie on the Seine and a Gypsy folk tale by Luminita Mihai Cioaba. Part of Haydn’s ‘Quartet in D, Op. 20 No. 4’ will be heard, as a preview of Sunday’s longer concert.
