Coram presents a play, Echoes Through Time: The Story of Care

Written by Brian Mullin

Directed by Vicky Moran

This could be a fresh start

A new chance

If you’re ready to take it?

A group of care-experienced young people are suspended in time - half in the modern world, half in the world of the Foundling Hospital, Britain’s first children’s charity, founded in 1739, which continues today as Coram.

As they grapple with the challenges of today’s care system, they explore the stories and experiences of the very first children in care, unearthing common threads of experience across three centuries.

The play will be performed as a semi-staged production in the atmospheric main space of Hoxton Hall, a Victorian music hall that was in operation at the same time as the Foundling Hospital.

The script was created in collaboration with a group of care-experienced young people autumn 2023 and written by Brian Mullin, whose past work includes Live to Tell (Omnibus Theatre), Leonardo (V&A) and We Wait in Joyful Hope (Theatre 503).

This forms part of Coram’s Voices Through Time: The Story of Care programme, made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the stories of children featured were explored by students researching in Coram’s Foundling Hospital Archive.

The play will be performed by an ensemble of care-experienced young people directed by Vicky Moran, whose recent direction includes £1 Thursdays (Finborough Theatre), In the Net (Jermyn Street Theatre) and No Sweat (Pleasance Theatre).

The performance of the play will be followed by celebratory drinks and nibbles, and a screening of the Voices Through Time documentary No Place Like Home.

Doors open at 6.30pm and the performance begins at 7.00pm.
