To coincide with COP31, Cornerstone Climate is delighted to invite you to a special event featuring a keynote address from The Rt Hon Lord Justice Dove, exploring the role of civil law in addressing environmental harm and providing remedies for affected communities.
Drawing on the landmark Mariana Dam litigation, arising from the collapse of the Fundão dam in Brazil in 2015, Lord Justice Dove will examine the legal complexities of seeking civil redress for large-scale environmental damage and the wider implications for environmental litigation and corporate accountability.
Taking place during COP31, the event follows the conference's thematic day on Human, Social Development and Gender, which focuses on issues including cultural heritage, employment and livelihoods, traditional and local knowledge, vulnerable communities and just transition.
Against this backdrop, the discussion will offer a timely opportunity to consider the role of the courts in addressing environmental harm, the challenges of securing effective remedies and the wider relationship between environmental justice and corporate responsibility.
Lord Justice Dove will be joined at this event by Estelle Dehon OBE KC and Hannah Taylor, the latter of whom was instructed on behalf of 620,000 Brazilian claimants in proceedings brought against BHP Group.
