As the healthcare landscape evolves, addressing the rising challenge of health misinformation becomes crucial for healthcare professionals. This Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course is designed for doctors seeking to enhance their skills in recognizing, understanding, and combatting health misinformation. The comprehensive module covers a spectrum of topics, from the basics of health misinformation to advanced strategies for maintaining patient trust and promoting information hygiene.
This module elucidates the distinctions between misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation, and explores the extent and consequences of health misinformation, analysing real-world cases to grasp the tangible effects on patients and public health. It also highlights the factors influencing vulnerability to health falsehoods, including health literacy, psychological, and social determinants. Finally, the course delves into how to combat health misinformation in practice, including insights into implementing effective strategies for communication and patient education, maintaining patient trust, and effectively counteracting misinformation within the clinical setting.
This course is for healthcare professionals working in hospital, community or private practice settings. Professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, nurses and general practitioners may apply for this course. On successful completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
- Understand the infodemic nature of health (mis)information.
- Identify hallmarks of medical misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation.
- Rapidly appraise information sources to which patients may be exposed.
- Identify factors which render patients more susceptible to harms.
- Counteract health misinformation effectively in practice.
- Improve patient and public health literacy and understanding .

Course Format
This one-day course employs a variety of teaching methods to enhance engagement and skill development, consisting of expert-led taught lecture sessions providing in-depth insights into each aspect of health misinformation, and Interactive class forums for participants to share experiences, discuss challenges, and collaboratively explore solutions. There will also be practical roleplay exercises simulating real-world scenarios to apply learned strategies in a controlled environment. Finally, learners will undertake an assignment, challenging participants to analyse a case study, propose solutions, and demonstrate practical application.
By the end of this CPD course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complex information landscape, combat health misinformation, and contribute to a more informed and resilient healthcare system.
