Tue 14 Jan 2025 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM
Cove Park, G84 0PE
Description
Cove Park and Business of Broadway, in association with Capital Theatres, are pleased to launch a one-day Commercial Theatre Producing Seminar, open to theatre producers and practitioners based in the UK and Ireland.
This professional development opportunity is intended for early and mid-career theatre producers who are seeking to learn more about commercial theatre producing in New York City and beyond. Others who work in the theatre industry, including but not limited to general management, company management, marketing, development, or in creative roles such as direction and design, are also welcome to enrol in the open Seminar.
Developed from the new Creative Producer Residency, this open day seminar reflects our aims to address gaps in the sector and provide more unique professional development opportunities for creative practitioners.
What to expect
10am - 12.30pm, Commercial Theatre Producing 101
The goal of this session is to demystify the process of creating and producing a Broadway show, and to offer insight into the world of theatrical producing at large. We examine how a show is produced, exploring the timeline of a show's creative development from ideation to production as well as the underlying financial model that fuels that process.
12.30pm - 2pm, Catered lunch for attendees and tour of Cove Park's 50-acre site (weather permitting)
2pm - 3pm, Fundraising in the United States
This session includes an overview of Securities law, including the role of accredited investors, a discussion about the state of fundraising in the United States and the government's role in funding (tax credits and grants). The Business of Broadway team will also share sample pitch decks from recent Broadway shows.
3pm - 4pm, Panel discussion and open forum for questions
4pm - 5.30pm, Networking and Refreshments

About Business of Broadway
Business of Broadway is a collective of four New York City-based theatre producers Sammy Lopez, Erica Rotstein, Heather Shields, and Rachel Sussman. Their goal is to pull back the curtain and democratise the business knowledge of commercial producing that has so often been withheld and therefore perpetuated a hierarchical system with producers situated at the top. By empowering you with deeper insight into how the artistry and economics interplay, their aim is not only to lay the groundwork for more effective and nonhierarchical future collaborations, but also allow you to urgently challenge the ways in which the business has historically operated and consider how we can build a more equitable, inclusive industry model that serves everyone.
About Cove Park
Cove Park is an international residency based on an outstanding 50-acre rural site in Argyll on Scotland’s west coast. Our programme of residencies, commissions, and collaborative projects respond to and promote the diversity of contemporary artistic practice. We support artists, creative practitioners, and researchers to develop and produce ambitious, innovative, and ground-breaking new work for audiences and participants across Scotland and beyond.
Cove Park’s residencies are unique in the UK. From our launch in 2000, our programme was conceived for local, national, and international artists working individually and in collaboration in all art forms, and at every career stage. We remain the only residency in the UK to bring together at any one time, and consistently throughout the year, up to 14 individuals specialising in a wide range of disciplines. This means we can offer exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary work and cultural exchange.
About Capital Theatres
Capital Theatres presents world-class shows to entertain and inspire audiences of all ages. The three venues include two of Scotland’s largest, oldest, and most respected theatres: Festival Theatre (1,915 seats), King’s Theatre (1,124 seats, currently closed for a major redevelopment) and The Studio (155 seats). Together they host over 700 performances each year with a broad and inclusive programme featuring the very best in drama, dance, musical theatre, family shows, live music, comedy, and pantomime.
Capital Theatres is a receiving house which works with producers across the UK to programme their work. The organisation also commissions and co-produces a select number of productions of its own each year. Much of the programme is exclusive in Scotland, providing the only opportunity for audiences to see the biggest shows touring north of the border, the best in international contemporary dance and the latest productions from leading local and national companies. Capital Theatres is also the home of Edinburgh’s largest community companies, providing them with a platform each year to share their work.
As Scotland’s largest theatre charity, Capital Theatres supports access to the arts for everyone and has an extensive Creative Engagement programme of talks, workshops and events to introduce and develop participation and interest in the heritage of its buildings and all areas of live performance. Capital Theatres is also evolving an artist development programme, Open@TheStudio, and has won the UK Theatre 2023 Award for Excellence in Inclusivity for its work with people living with dementia.
