Join CPRE Gloucestershire’s South Cotswolds & Tetbury District Committee for a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how Gloucestershire is turning waste into energy.
Hosted by FCC Environment at their state-of-the-art Energy from Waste Facility near Stonehouse, this guided walking tour will take you through the entire journey of residual household waste — from what’s left over after recycling and composting, to how it’s safely combusted to generate clean electricity for the local grid.
Using advanced technology and closely regulated by the Environment Agency, the facility processes up to 190,000 tonnes of waste each year and generates enough electricity to power approximately 25,000 homes. It diverts more than 90% of Gloucestershire’s residual household waste from landfill, recovering valuable materials such as metals and aggregates that would otherwise be lost. In doing so, it makes a vital contribution to the county’s renewable energy production and to the UK’s broader energy and climate goals.
Visitors will learn about the many environmental benefits of energy-from-waste recovery. These include significantly reducing landfill use and harmful methane emissions, providing a reliable local source of electricity, and supporting a circular economy through the recovery and reuse of non-recyclable materials.
As part of the visit, guests will also have access to the site’s dedicated Education and Visitor Centre, which features interactive displays on sustainable waste management and the principles of the 4Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover.
This is a rare opportunity to see engineering and environmental innovation in action and to gain meaningful insight into one of Gloucestershire’s key sustainability initiatives.
