Back in 1985, the political commentator Andrew Sullivan published a prophetic paper for the Centre for Policy Studies: 'Greening the Tories'. Since then, the Conservatives have indeed gone green - delivering one of the most impressive performances on decarbonisation in the West. Yet many within the movement are still not happy about this environmental turn, especially with the costs of Net Zero becoming a pressing political issue.
As part of the CPS's 50th anniversary celebrations, we look back on that paper and ask whether, in a cost of living crisis, the Conservatives can still pursue an agenda that is both pro-growth and pro-green.
The event, featuring Andrew Sullivan alongside a range of other speakers, will take place at Old Queen Street Café on Thursday 25 April from 18.00 - 19.00. Drinks will be available for guests to enjoy after the panel.
