As long as photographs have existed, the subject of the female nude has been dominated by a seemingly endless lineage of celebrated male photographers. Through discussions and presentations that illuminate how the male gaze has shaped our understanding of the female body in images, students will work with artist JORDANNA KALMAN to develop new strategies that center the nude model’s agency within the image-making process. How do we move beyond the limitations of our photographic forefathers? What does a feminist perspective look like when applied to nude photography? Guided by emotional intent, performance, and conceptual frameworks, students will photograph nude models and create a new body of work grounded in these ideas.

In addition to theory and practice, this workshop will cover practical information when working with models, including contracts and etiquette. No prior experience is needed, and artists at any level of experience are encouraged to sign up with an understanding that this will be a safe environment for everyone involved, especially the models.

This workshop will take place over the course of two sessions: the first, in-person, followed by an online session to discuss the work made during the workshop and paths forward.

WHAT TO BRING: Your camera of choice, and a notebook.
