The liquid emulsions used today are largely unchanged from those developed in the early days of photography. By the 1880s, gelatin-based emulsions were being manufactured, helping photography grow into the industry we know today.

In 1965, the Rockland Company introduced one of the first “emulsions in a bottle,” Liquid Light. This innovation renewed interest in hand-applied processes, allowing photographers to coat emulsions onto surfaces of their choosing rather than relying on factory-prepared paper. Once melted, the emulsion can be applied to a wide range of materials, including canvas, glass, metal, wood, and more– all usable within a standard black-and-white darkroom.

In this workshop, led by fine art photographer, author and educator JILL ENFIELD, students will learn how to coat with liquid emulsion, expose, and process prints using standard black-and-white chemistry, building the skills needed to confidently work on a variety of materials. While this workshop will focus on working with paper, students will leave with an understanding of how to apply this technique to a whole new variety of surfaces.

WHAT TO BRING: 35mm, medium format, or 4x5 negatives to expose onto self-coated substrates. Students are also welcome to bring other papers to experiment with.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
JILL ENFIELD is a fine art photographer, educator, and curator whose work focuses on historical techniques and alternative photographic processes. She leads workshops and lectures internationally each year, sharing her expertise with photographers around the world. She is the author of three award-winning books: Photo Imaging: A Complete Guide to Alternative Processes (Amphoto) and Jill Enfield’s Guide to Alternative Processes: Popular Historical and Contemporary Techniques (Focal Press, 1st and 2nd editions), which are widelyused in educational institutions globally. Her photographs are held in museum and private collections internationally.
