VanDyke brown prints are an economical century-old process that allows artists to achieve beautiful warm toned prints with a wide tonal range, making this process a valued option for photographers wishing to experiment with alternative processes.
VDb prints are made by combining silver nitrate, ferric ammonium citrate and tartaric acid to make a solution that can be used for up to a year or two. Water color paper is coated with the sensitizer, exposed with UV light, and then washed in running water before it is fixed, cleared, and washed again and then dried. The results reveal a beautiful brown color.
Participants will learn the process for coating the paper in the darkroom and how to transform their digital images into a digital negatives (contrasty, while still maintaining a nice tonal range) using the Digital Media Lab. Participants will then test their negatives and once their desired effect is achieved, final prints will be made. Each student will leave with several prints at the end of the workshop. Participants will gain the confidence to continue working with this process on their own.
