MAXIMUM CAPACITY: 10
TUITION: $150
CPW MEMBER TUITION: $135
In this workshop, instructor Jackson Porter Hardin will introduce students to multi-signature sewing and case-binding techniques used in fine and edition binding. Students will design and produce a fully cased-in hardcover book, learning the precision and sequencing that give hardbound books their strength and character.
This workshop will cover the "rules" of bookbinding, and enable students to develop an understanding of the book form through exploration of material and structure. Topics covered include:
- Paper grain, handling, cutting, and folding
- Bookbinding adhesives and their uses
- Multi-signature sewn binding methods
- Hardcover construction and casing-in
Students will have opportunities for variation in book design and choice of materials. There is no prior experience or materials required, however for those participants already comfortable with editing and sequencing, students are welcome to bring their own pre-printed content and materials to bind in class. If interested in printing a project in preparation for the workshop at CPW, contact bookpress@cpw.org.
