For anyone missing hands-on photographic processes, cyanotypes are an accessible and endlessly creative way to make images without a traditional darkroom. Using light, chemistry, and a range of materials, cyanotypes invite experimentation and can be made with minimal space and equipment, making them an ideal process for your home or studio.

This two-day workshop is designed for photographers and artists at all levels, from those making their first cyanotype to experienced practitioners looking to expand their approach. Beginners will learn the foundations of the process and develop the confidence to begin making prints on their own. For those with prior experience, the workshop will offer opportunities to explore new approaches to digital negatives, refine technique, troubleshoot inconsistencies, and push the process in new directions.

Day 1 introduces the history and fundamentals of cyanotype through presentations and demos, including how to print digital negatives, followed by time to work. Day 2 moves beyond the basics, exploring layering, toning, alternative substrates, and techniques for creating more nuanced and consistent prints. Participants will also have open studio time to work in CPW's Digital Media Lab and darkroom, with guidance on developing an effective cyanotype practice at home.

Who should attend: The workshop welcomes both beginners and experienced cyanotype makers. Beginners are encouraged to attend both days to build a strong foundation, while those with prior experience may choose to attend only Day 2. Students will leave with a portfolio of finished cyanotype prints.
