Drawing with Roots

Drawing with Roots is a hands-on workshop exploring how plant growth can be used to make images.

You will carve a design into a mould, then plant seeds into it. As the seeds grow, the roots follow the carved mould and begin to form an image. The piece will continue to develop at home over the following two weeks, changing with the conditions it is kept in and the care it receives.

During the workshop, you will be guided through carving your mould, planting the seeds, and setting up the piece to grow. You will leave with your own planted mould and simple care instructions to continue the process at home. No previous experience is needed, just an eagerness to try out something new!

You will:

  • Carve a beeswax mould to guide root growth
  • Plant seeds and learn how to care for them
  • Use growth as a way of producing an image
  • Work with a process that continues after the workshop
  • Leave with a living piece that develops over time

This workshop is part of The Process Room and looks at image-making as something that can be created using alternative methods.
