Dr. Kurt Kaindl, Fotohof Salzburg, Austria: The City as a Stage
Wolf Suschitzky’s photographic legacy is what every archivist dreams of: the output of a very long and active life as a photographer, from his training in Vienna in the early 1930s, to the early 2000s in London, is fully documented. In his photographic work, he observed a classical formal language and utilised photography with its ability to cover small details and portraits of individual people as well as expansive overviews of specific themes. Fotohof Salzburg now cares for the Wolf Suschitzky archive and held a major retrospective of his work in 2020. This talk focuses on working with the archive and international partners.
Dr. Julia Winckler, University of Brighton Community University Partnership PI: Crawley New Town seen through the lens of Wolf Suschitzky
Over a seventy-year long career, the émigré photographer and cameraman Wolf Suschitzky (1912-2016) produced a large body of photographic work known for its integrity, compassion, and exceptional dedication to craftsmanship. This includes photographs made on location in the first nine British New Towns within a decade of their construction. During a research residency at Fotohof Salzburg, Julia Winckler rediscovered this collection. It includes more than 100 images featuring Crawley New Town’s architecture, businesses, shopping arcades, houses, schools, nurseries, residents and green spaces. In this talk, Julia Winckler will discuss the original commission that sparked the making of these images in 1959 and their return to Crawley for the first time since they were taken more than 65 years ago.
Ms Georgia Wrighton (MRTPI), University of Brighton Community University Partnership Project Co-I: Wolf Suschitzky’s photographs of Crawley: uncovering post war New Towns as town planning heritage
Wolf Suschitzky’s photographs help us to uncover and celebrate the early beginnings of Crawley, and the sense of optimism at that time. Georgia Wrighton will take us through the background and history of New Towns, and why they should be valued and cherished as part of the UK’s town planning and architectural heritage.
The exhibition 'Crawley New Town seen through the lens of Wolf Suschitzky' is open to the public from 6th February - 29th March 2025
