Before its closure earlier this year, the Thames Estuary Growth Board commissioned design and placemaking experts Create Streets to explore how design can derisk development and accelerate the delivery of high-quality homes.

Drawing on previous delivery examples, and working closely Medway Council, Create Streets produced a small sites design code to unlock and deliver gentle density on an important Chatham town centre site, applying principles developed directly with local residents.

Recognising the importance of sharing this learning and approach across the Thames Estuary and beyond, we are delighted to invite you to a webinar led by Nicholas Boys Smith and Tom Noble of Create Streets, alongside colleagues from Medway Council, to introduce the small sites design code and wider recommendations demonstrating ways to de-risk development, encourage SMEs and provide higher density with public consent.

The webinar will cover:

  • Designed to deliver: Introduction to the approach (5 mins)
  • Releasing good growth: Tackling the viability trap (5 mins)
  • Ideas and selected case studies: Unlocking brownfield development, encouraging local SME developers, the Chatham Small Sites Design Code (10 mins)
  • Potential delivery mechanisms in England: Releasing good growth (10 mins)
  • Delivery of design in Medway: Implementing the Chatham Small Sites Design Code (10 mins)
  • Q&A: Discussion (15 mins)
  • Next steps: Offer to meet to discuss similar schemes (5 mins)
